Tom Moran is a British photographer who shoots a lot in Japan. We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with him last year on a few different projects. Tom is based in the UK but manages to make it over to Japan frequently to shoot.  We caught up with him recently to see what he’s been doing:

Tom Moran（トム・モラン）は、日本で多くの写真を撮影しているイギリス人フォトグラファーです。私たちは昨年、彼といくつかのプロジェクトでコラボレーションをさせていただきました。Tomはイギリスを拠点にしていますが、撮影のために頻繁に来日しています。 フォトグラファーを目指したきっかけや、近況についてインタビューをしました。

Q – Can you tell us about your background? Where are you from and what was your journey to becoming a professional photographer?

あなたの出身、プロの写真家になるまでの道のりを教えてください。 

A – I grew up in the beautiful and historic City of Durham, in the North East of England. We didn’t have a car or a TV until I was older so I played a lot in nature, in the local woods. Riding bikes, climbing trees, solving mysteries. I was interested in Graphic Design and studied Art at Newcastle College before discovering my passion for Photography which I then went to study at Nottingham Trent University. I practically lived in the darkrooms for 3 years before moving to London in 2005 where I found work first as a Studio Assistant at Big Sky Studios, then I spent 7 years assisting photographers before starting to focus on my own career around 6 years ago.

私はイングランド北東部にある美しく歴史あるダラム市で育ちました。大きくなるまで車もテレビもなかったので、森の中など自然でよく遊びました。自転車に乗ったり、木に登ったり、謎解きをしたり。グラフィックデザインに興味を持ち、ニューカッスル大学でアートを学びましたが、写真への情熱に気付き、ノッティンガム・トレント大学で学びました。2005年にロンドンに引っ越してBig Skyスタジオでスタジオアシスタントをする前の3年間は、実際に暗室の中で生活していました。その後、6年前に自分のキャリアを始める前に、7年間写真家のアシスタントをしていました。

Q – How would you describe your photography style? What are you most interested in shooting these days?

ご自身の撮影スタイルを教えてください。最近、最も興味を持って撮影しているものは何ですか？

My photography style is quite graphic, I think, due to an early interest in Graphic Design. I enjoy expressing this through lighting and composition, often giving studio lights real-world characters to ensure everything has a purpose and an origin. I am also interested in feelings and emotions in images and how these work and can be created. So there’s two main styles, a formal, graphic style and an intuitive emotional style. And the fun part is trying to combine the two! 

グラフィックデザインに興味を持っていたこともあり、私の写真スタイルは、かなりグラフィカルなものだと思います。照明や構図で表現するのが好きで、スタジオの照明を実在する人物に当て、目的や由来となるストーリーが感じられるようにすることが多いです。また、イメージの中にある感触や感情、それらがどのように作用し、どのようにしたら形にできるかにも興味があります。私の場合は、主にフォーマルでグラフィックなスタイルと、直感的なフィーリングでつくる2つのスタイルがあります。そして楽しいのは、この2つのスタイルを組み合わせてみることなんです。

Q – You’ve shot quite a lot in Japan. What’s the connection there? What draws you to Japan creatively?

日本での撮影が多いですね。日本との関係は？また、日本にどうして魅力を感じているのでしょうか？

I’ve always been drawn to Japan for various reasons, from growing up Sumo wrestling with my brother, to listening to Japanese electronic music as a teenager. I developed an interest in Japanese films and Photography as a young man and was able to travel to and work in Japan quite a lot over the last 10 years where I have discovered many layers to the culture and many things to love and explore. For me, its like a parallel universe – its the same but different!

兄と相撲をとって育ったことや、10代の頃に日本のエレクトロニックミュージックを聴いていたことなど、様々な理由でいつも日本に惹かれてきました。若い頃から日本の映画や写真に興味を持ち、この10年の間に日本を旅行したり、仕事をしたりして、日本の文化に多くの深みを発見しました。私にとって、日本はパラレルユニバース（パラレルワールド）のような感じです。同じでもあり、違うのです！

Q – Can you tell us about any personal projects you are working on at the moment? 

今取り組んでいる個人的なプロジェクトについて教えてください。

I’ve started working with a Japanese set designer on a still life project based on Sumo. I can’t tell you any more than that though!

日本のセットデザイナーと相撲を題材にした物撮りプロジェクトを始めました。それ以上のことは言えないけどね。
